Mary explains that her daughter Tanya is a single mother to two girls, 12-year-old Quinshayla and 6-year-old Alize, and has dealt with domestic violence that put the girls' dad in prison. Both girls have gone through some rough experiences, including doors being kicked-in, guns pulled on their family, and being homeless for a year. As a result, the girls have had to switch schools many times and have fallen behind. Quinshayla is entering 6th grade in the fall but can only read at a 3rd grade level. So Brooke and Tanya have secured these young girls two $4000 scholarships to Sylvan for tutoring! Listen as Brooke and Tanya surprise this family with the news... Because Sylvan is personalized for each student, they will begin with a reading and math assessment for Quinshayla and an early reading assessment for Alize. Based on this unique group of tests, they will be able to pinpoint where the girls have strengths and precisely identify their skill gaps. Then the girls will receive an intense 6 hours of instruction per week over the remainder of the summer, and adjust the schedule for the girls when school begins in the fall. "Hi Brooke and Monti, I always hear about the wonderful things you do for listeners. I have a problem. My daycare providers husband died last month on March 10th leaving her a single mom of 5 children that still live at home. Ages 4-16. If this is not bad enough today she called me in tears because she was naive and gave out some bank information online to someone that she was ordering stuff from. They cleaned her out. She is left with no money. My kids are the only kids that she cares for and she is like family to me. I am sick to think of how this could happen. To get to the point they took her mortgage money and grocery money and I was wondering if you had any connections that I could call. She is a very proud lady and there is a time to be proud and a time when you have to ask for help. She has had a rotten month her husband passed, her fridge is dying and now this. And below read Aiyana's email explaining what her family has gone through this year... These are not the words of a 10-year-old, she is so wise beyond her age! . "Dear Brooke and Monti, . My name is Aiyana and I am 10 years old I’ll be 11 on 12/30 (SMILE). . I hope I am not too late but my bus driver listens to your station in the mornings on my way to school, and I heard you are helping families in need for Christmas and I thought of my family. They don’t know that I am writing you I am hoping to surprise them. There are 6 people in my family and one more on the way, my dad, my mom , 3 brothers (Braylen 13,Shawn Jr. 2, TaeyJon 7months) and of course me. . My family and I have been through a lot this year. My dad lost his job and we were left with out a home, so we were in a couple of shelters this year and now we are finally in transitional housing. My mom and dad don’t want us to know, and I know they try very hard to do as much as they can for me and my brothers but I can tell they are having a lot of problems this Christmas with paying their bills and being able to get us Christmas presents too. This may seem a bit unorthodox, because I am not writing about one of my kids. Instead, I am writing about my little brother, Zack. Last Thanksgiving, our mother was killed in a drinking and driving accident, just over 3 years after we lost our father to a sudden death. These last couple of years have been really tough on us three kids, but especially for my little brother. The holiday season this year will be extremely difficult, and with us having to pay all kinds of lawyer and estate tax fees, we have no money to keep our holiday traditions alive. My wish is that my little brother, who's passion is to go to culinary school when he graduates high school, gets a brand-new nice set of Cutco knives to start off his culinary career. It seems that the only thing keeping his spirit afloat, is the hope of one day being a chef and owning his own restaurant. I feel like I relate to Monti a little bit when it comes to family. See my parents too are always going at it for one reason or another (not physically but, yelling and screaming) and I have been called so many times by my little brother crying to go get him because mom and dad are fighting. This has been an issue for years and that’s part of the reason why I moved out at 17and now I'm 20, the oldest out of 4 kids and the other 3 are still living at home having to go through this time and time again. I would say they all deserve something special, but my little brother I feel is the one who hurts the most. I feel like he is mine sometimes, I basically took care of him as if he were mine when he was a baby, and I adore him and it hurts me so much to see him sad when these things go on at home. Sometimes I wish I could give him everything he wants but, living on my own and only working part time is already a big struggle. I know Pedro wants a wii sooo bad! He always hears his friends at school talking about all the games they play on their wii's. I was hoping to get him one for Christmas but, to be honest, I can't afford it. I really hope that you guys can help me out, but mostly just make him really happy! He deserves it. For a 9 year old, he's been through so much and yet he still keeps a smile on his face and goes on living his childhood.
